Whispering Cave
The newest trail in Hocking Hills.
What is Whispering Cave?
Whispering Cave is the newest hiking destination in Hocking Hills State Park, and it has quickly become a favorite among those who know about it. The trail leads to a 300-foot-wide recess cave with a waterfall over 100 feet tall cascading over the rim. A swinging bridge over Salt Creek adds a touch of adventure to the hike.
The trail to the cave is 0.8 miles from the trailhead, making it a manageable walk for most visitors. For those looking for a longer outing, the full 5-mile Hemlock Bridge Trail loop connects to Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave, creating a scenic circuit through some of the park's best terrain.
Because this trail is newer, it doesn't appear in older guidebooks and remains less crowded than the classic formations. The cave itself is a stunning natural amphitheater, and the waterfall is at its best after a good rain.
Tips for visiting Whispering Cave
- 1 This trail is less crowded than Old Man's Cave and just as impressive.
- 2 The swinging bridge over Salt Creek is a highlight. Take your time crossing.
- 3 The full Hemlock Bridge Trail loop connects to Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave.
- 4 Visit after rain for the best waterfall. The 100-foot cascade is dramatic when the water is flowing.
