Our Story
Simply Serene
How It Began
Why did we start Avenwood Cabins?
Avenwood Cabins was born from a simple idea: getting away shouldn't mean giving things up. Too many cabin stays in the Hocking Hills region meant choosing between nature and comfort. You either roughed it in a drafty A-frame with no hot water, or you stayed in a cookie-cutter resort miles from the forest with parking lot views. We wanted to build something different. Cabins that belong to the landscape, designed with the same care you'd expect from a boutique hotel, but set deep enough in the Hocking Hills forest that the only sounds are birdsong and creek water. Today Avenwood Cabins operates 14 private cabins on wooded lots near New Straitsville, Ohio, each one equipped with a hot tub, fireplace, fire pit, and high-speed WiFi. Every detail, from the placement of each window to the angle of the deck, was chosen to frame this part of Ohio the way it deserves to be seen.
Our Philosophy
What makes Avenwood different from other Hocking Hills cabins?
Most cabin rentals in the Hocking Hills area are clustered along the busy corridor near Old Man's Cave, where you can hear your neighbors and the parking lots fill up by 9 AM on weekends. Avenwood Cabins sits in the Hocking Hills region, east of the main tourist strip, inside Wayne National Forest on private wooded lots where the nearest neighbor is out of sight and out of earshot. Every cabin is intentionally private. No shared walls, no resort lobbies, no schedules. Just you, the forest, and the freedom to do exactly as much or as little as you want. Our newer-style cabins feature double-sided wood-burning fireplaces, hanging egg chairs, memory foam beds, and kitchenettes. The original-style cabins offer full kitchens, themed interiors, gas fireplaces, and indoor jacuzzi tubs. All 14 cabins are pet-friendly with a simple $50 flat rate that covers all pets for the entire stay.
The Land
Where are Avenwood Cabins located?
Avenwood Cabins is located at 8415 Howdyshell Road in New Straitsville, Ohio, in the Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio, inside Wayne National Forest. The Hocking Hills area is one of the state's most popular outdoor destinations, defined by dramatic sandstone gorges, hidden waterfalls, and dense forests of hemlock and oak that were carved by millions of years of water and wind. Our cabins sit roughly 35 minutes from Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave, the three most visited formations in Hocking Hills State Park. The surrounding area offers everything from winery visits and local dining to kayaking, zip-lining, horseback riding, and ATV trails. New Straitsville itself is a small, quiet town with deep Appalachian roots. It's close enough to the trails for a day hike but far enough from the crowds that evenings are genuinely peaceful.
The Family Behind Avenwood
Who runs Avenwood Cabins?
Our story is rooted in faith, family, and a deep love for this country and the outdoors. Britney and her brother Michael first purchased these cabins in 2012 while serving in the Marine Corps and Navy. What started as an investment quickly became something much more meaningful to our family.
Today, Zackery, also a Marine Corps veteran, and Britney continue to care for this place with that same sense of purpose.
We are parents to six children: five boys and a long-awaited baby girl. We know how rare and important it is to slow down and truly connect. Our heart behind these cabins is simple. We want to create a peaceful space where couples can step away from the busyness of life, breathe deeply, and experience the beauty of God's creation together.
