Canoeing & Kayaking
Paddle the Hocking River.
What is Canoeing & Kayaking?
The Hocking River offers a gentle, scenic paddling experience perfect for all skill levels. Winding through the heart of the Hocking Hills region, the river passes beneath towering sycamores, alongside sandstone bluffs, and through stretches of quiet forest where the only sounds are birdsong and your paddle dipping into the water.
Several local outfitters offer canoe and kayak rentals with shuttle service, making it easy to plan a half-day or full-day trip. The most popular stretches are Class I water, calm enough for beginners and families but with enough current to keep things interesting. Some outfitters also offer guided tours that include stops at scenic points along the river.
A day on the river pairs perfectly with a morning hike. Many of our guests start with an early trail walk, spend the afternoon on the water, and finish the day relaxing in the hot tub. It's the kind of day that makes you forget you ever had a schedule.
Tips for visiting Canoeing & Kayaking
- 1 Book your rental the day before, especially on summer weekends. Kayaks sell out fast.
- 2 Bring waterproof bags for phones and cameras. You will get splashed.
- 3 The 6-mile float takes about 3 hours and is the most popular route.
- 4 Wear water shoes or sandals with straps. Flip-flops will be lost to the river.
