John Glenn Astronomy Park

Stargazing in one of Ohio's darkest skies.

What is John Glenn Astronomy Park?

John Glenn Astronomy Park sits near Old Man's Cave in one of Ohio's few remaining dark-sky areas, far from the light pollution that washes out the stars in most of the state. On a clear night, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and the difference from what you see in a city is staggering.

Guided programs run on clear Friday and Saturday nights from March through November, starting 30 minutes after sunset. Astronomers lead laser-guided constellation tours, pointing out planets, star clusters, and deep-sky objects. Telescopes are set up for viewing, and the presentations are engaging for both beginners and experienced stargazers.

The park is open 24 hours for self-guided visits, but you'll need to reserve a free parking pass in advance. After a day of hiking and an evening under the stars, the drive back to the cabin through the dark forest is an experience in itself.

Tips for visiting John Glenn Astronomy Park

  • 1 Reserve the free parking pass online before you go. It's required even though there's no charge.
  • 2 Bring warm layers. It gets cold at night even in summer, especially on clear nights.
  • 3 Programs run on clear Friday and Saturday nights only. Check the weather forecast.
  • 4 Leave your phone in your pocket. Screen light ruins your night vision. Give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust.
