Rockbridge State Nature Preserve
Ohio's largest natural bridge.
What is Rockbridge State Nature Preserve?
Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is home to Ohio's largest natural bridge, a massive arch of Black Hand Sandstone stretching more than 100 feet long and 10 to 20 feet wide, rising 50 feet above a ravine carved by a small tributary of the Hocking River. The bridge was formed over millions of years as water eroded the softer rock beneath the harder capstone.
The 202-acre preserve features a 2.75-mile trail system that winds through mixed hardwood forest and along sandstone outcroppings. The trails are well-maintained but less traveled than those in the state park, offering a quieter alternative for hikers who want to explore without the crowds.
The natural bridge itself is an impressive sight from below, where you can appreciate the scale of the formation. The surrounding forest is rich with wildflowers in spring and brilliant foliage in fall, making this a rewarding visit in any season.
