Ash Cave
Ohio's largest recess cave.
What is Ash Cave?
Ash Cave is a massive horseshoe-shaped recess cave and the largest in Ohio at 700 feet wide and 100 feet deep. A seasonal waterfall cascades over the rim, creating a natural amphitheater that echoes with the sound of falling water in spring. The cave gets its name from the enormous mounds of ash found by early settlers, remnants of centuries of campfires built by Native Americans.
What makes Ash Cave special is its accessibility. A paved, wheelchair-friendly trail leads directly from the parking lot to the cave floor in just a quarter mile. This makes it the most family-friendly destination in Hocking Hills. Strollers, wheelchairs, and young children can all enjoy the experience.
The cave's natural acoustics have made it a venue for occasional park ranger talks and small events. Stand in the center and speak. The way the sound carries is remarkable. In winter, the waterfall freezes into a dramatic ice column that attracts visitors from across the region.
